Dr Xinlei Niu (PhD 2022-2026)
Generative Audio Synthesis in Sound, Speech, and Music (thesis)
Xinlei’s PhD developed six methods for making generative audio synthesis more efficient, flexible, and controllable across speech, environmental sound, and music. She now works at TikTok in Sydney.
Dr Yichen Wang (PhD 2021-2026)
Beyond Mapping: Exploring Spatial Musical Interface Design with Augmented Reality (thesis)
Yichen designed and studied three spatial musical interfaces for head-mounted AR, covering freehand solo performance, collaborative performance between musicians, and human-AI co-creation.
Dr Benedikte Wallace (PhD at University of Oslo 2018-2023)
AI-generated Dance and The Subjectivity Challenge (thesis)
Benedikte’s PhD collected a motion capture dataset of dance improvisation, trained generative models on it, and evaluated the resulting AI-generated dance with dancers and choreographers.
Feiyue Tao (Master student 2022)
Multi-View Web Interfaces in Augmented Reality (thesis)
Feiyue created a VR system for experimenting with web interfaces in a work environment and was awarded a Postgraduate Medal for Academic Excellence in her Master of Computing (Advanced) program. During her program, Feiyue was a research trainee at CSIRO Data61 and she was recruited by Google soon after graduation.

Dr Yichen Wang (Master student 2020-2021)
Sonic sculptural staircase: An investigation of highly immersive and world aware augmented reality in augmented sculptural staircase experience (thesis)
Sandy Ma (Honours student 2024)
Touching Wires: Exploring Tactility in Human-AI Musical Co-Creation (thesis)
Sandy built a quilted textile interface for a Bela-based synthesis instrument and studied call-and-response performance with it, both autoethnographically and in a user study. She is now a PhD researcher in the SMCClab.
Rohan Proctor (Honours student 2019)
Exploring an assistance tool for group laptop performances (paper)
Rohan built a browser-based networked performance system that lets laptop ensemble players steer sequences from locally-run neural network models in real time. His honours project became a NIME 2020 paper.
Robert McArthur (Undergraduate student 2020)
Evolutionary Music Making (paper)
Robert made an interactive application that evolves music through user selection over an autoencoder’s latent space. His undergraduate project became an EvoMUSART 2021 paper, and he now works on phylogenetics software at the ANU Research School of Biology.
Dr Tønnes Nygaard (PhD Researcher at University of Oslo 2016-2020)
Legging It: An Evolutionary Approach to Morphological Adaptation for a Real-World Quadruped Robot (thesis)
Tønnes created a open-source quadruped robotics platform with mechanically extensible legs for evolving robot morphology in real-world activity. His work was featured in Nature: Machine Intelligence, Evolutionary Computation and was widely reported in the press. Tønnes now holds a faculty position at Oslo Metropolitan University and collaborates with the University of Oslo, Norwegian Defence Research Establishment, and CSIRO Data61.
